About Us

Our school motto is, “Ake Runga”, which means – “Our best always”

We are nestled in the heart of Waitangirua, about 20 minutes from Wellington City and have a wonderful outlook over Porirua East and the distant hills.

Tairangi is a Decile 1 multicultural school that fosters strong links with our community.  We have 7 classrooms at the school and students range from Year 0 through to Year 8, with classes being divided into two syndicates:

  • Nga putiputi iti - Junior School (Yrs 0-3)

  • Te Kotahitanga- Senior School (Yrs 4-6) & (Yrs 7-8)

We offer a wide curriculum to our students and pride ourselves in producing ‘quality’ work.  Our classrooms are rich environments where students are challenged and able to express themselves in a variety of ways.  All classrooms place great emphasis on reading, writing and mathematics.  We teach integrated units of work to encompass all curriculum areas with meaningful experiences.

All classrooms are spacious and fully resourced.  We aim to keep class sizes as low as possible to maximize student achievement and success.

The school also boasts:

  • An excellent and busy library that is serviced by the latest technology.

  • Programmes in te reo Maori for all classes, taught by a dedicated teacher fluent in te reo Maori and knowledgeable in Tikanga Maori.

  • An ESOL programme in which a trained teacher gives extra support to students who have English as their second language supported by teacher aides.

  • A reading recovery programme run by trained reading recovery teachers

  • A hall with a large stage, a state of the art sound system and permanent multi-media projector and screen.

  • We participate in a wide variety of tournaments and sports events within the local schools cluster and the wider Wellington sports bodies.

We have a proud history of producing positive students that go on to achieve success at secondary school.
